Te Puia is New Zealand’s premier Maori Cultural Centre and Geothermal Reserve.
Te Whakarewarewa is New Zealand’s best known thermal area and contains a tremendous variety of geothermal activity. There are more than 500 springs in the thermal reserve which vary from cold to boiling cauldrons. Nestled in the geothermal valley of Whakarewarewa is Pohutu Geyser which bursts into life up to 20 times each day, shooting boiling water up to 30 meters (90 feet) skyward.
Visitors will see skilful artisans as they continue to train in the traditional arts and crafts of carving and weaving. Performances of traditional and contemporary dancing also are a daily feature.
Maori guides share their heritage, pride and values that have been handed down through the generations. They re-tell stories that, in many instances, have been told for generations, and handed down through their individual families.
Visitors will also be transported back to pre-European times as they walk through our recreation of a typical Maori village, displayed within a forest setting.
Te Puia is fortunate to have a Kiwi Conservation Centre and visitors are able to view our national icon in a specially lit kiwi house.
Our latest addition is Te Whare Tapere, a new high tech interactive gallery. Learn about the arrival of Te Arawa ancestors to this region, the settlement of this valley, customs and traditions of Rotorwhio Marae, traditional Maori weaponry, clothing and artefacts, musical instruments, geology and the natural environment.
